This test is done on the serum of patient.
Direct (or conjugated) bilirubin. This Direct bilirubin dissolves in water (it is soluble) and is made by the liver from indirect bilirubin.
Normal Values
Total bilirubin 0.3–1.0 mg/dL or 5.1–17.0 mmol/L
Direct bilirubin 0.1–0.3 mg/dL or 1.0–5.1 mmol/L
Indirect bilirubin (total bilirubin level minus direct bilirubin level)
0.2–0.7 mg/dL or 3.4–11.9 mmol/L
Significance
This in one of the liver funtion test. It is raised in hepatic and post hepatic type of jaundice.
Clinically jaundice appear when the level of bilirubin is more than 2 mg/dl.
